"Somebody just got shot!" South Oak Cliff High School freshman girl grazed by bullet at park across from campus, officials say

Sources told WFAA that a teen girl was shot near South Oak Cliff High School. Sources say the shooter hasn't been arrested yet.

DALLAS — A teen girl was grazed by a bullet on Monday near a Dallas high school, according to police and district officials.

Dallas Police say they responded to a shooting call at about 4:25 p.m. A Dallas ISD spokesperson told WFAA that a teen girl was shot at a Renaissance Park across the street from South Oak Cliff High School, where she attends 9th grade, shortly before dismissal. Sources told WFAA that leading up to the shooting, a group of students was skipping school at the park and a fight broke out.

A DISD spokesperson said after the shooting, the girl ran to the school's football field for help.

That spokesperson also confirmed that the girl is expected to be okay. Preliminary information indicates the girl was not the target of the shooting, and was just a bystander, a DISD spokesperson said.

The spokesperson told WFAA that Dallas Police held dismissal during the start of the investigation. According to the spokesperson, mental health resources will be available to South Oak Cliff High School students on Tuesday.

Nearby resident, Roberto Arellano, told WFAA he heard four or five gunshots.

Sancy Montgomery, whose son is a junior at South Oak Cliff, said her son called her panicked.

"He was hollering and crying, 'Somebody just got shot!'" she said. "Not to know what was going on, the last call I would want to get is that call right there."

Her son, Deveen Ivroy, explained, "we heard an announcement, 'lockdown, everyone go to the gym,'" he said. "I was scared because it was right by the school, it’s like I always come through [the park] to walk through the school. I was excited to see my mom, because you never know it could have been me."

At last check, police still have not made an arrest.

This is a developing story. More information will be added to this article as WFAA learns more.
