A man who fled the scene of a fatal multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 30 in Mesquite late Friday night was arrested.
Police said Jorge Valdez-Martinez was driving a 2003 Chevy Tahoe that rear-ended a Toyota Corolla, causing a wreck involving four cars and an 18-wheeler, in the 2800 block of westbound I-30.
The driver of the Toyota was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
Valdez-Martinez, 41, fled the scene of the crash on foot. Mesquite officers eventually tracked him down and arrested him.
Police said Valdez-Martinez was believed to be intoxicated. He was charged with intoxication manslaughter with a vehicle and was being held in the Mesquite Jail on $50,000 bond, records show.
There was no immediate word on injuries to occupants of the other vehicles involved in the crash.
Two minor accidents occurred overnight on the same stretch of I-30 near LBJ Freeway. One involved a vehicle speeding around the scene of the pileup that hit a police squad car. The officer was not injured in that accident.
