Suspect in truck theft killed by Farmers Branch officer in Dallas

Dallas police say a driver inside a truck that was reported stolen was shot Wednesday as Farmers Branch police monitored the vehicle.

DALLAS — A driver in a suspected stolen truck was fatally wounded Wednesday night after a Farmers Branch officer fired at the vehicle.

It started at about 7 p.m. as Farmers Branch police were "monitoring a pickup truck that had been reported stolen out of the city of Irving," read a statement from Dallas police late Wednesday night.

Police said three people were inside the truck, which was backed into a parking spot at the shopping center in the 11400 block of Emerald Street in Northwest Dallas.

When officers approached the truck, the driver began to pull out, police allege. One of the officers fired at the truck, hitting the driver, who was transported to Parkland Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The identity of the driver hasn't been released.

An officer at the scene was also transported to the hospital. Police didn't reveal how the officer was injured but said the injuries were minor.

The other two occupants inside the truck were uninjured and taken into custody for questioning.

The Dallas Police Department's Special Investigations Unit is investigating the shooting.
