MELISSA -- For the second time this week, a Melissa High School employee has been arrested.
Darrell Glenn Whitten, 50, is charged with having an improper relationship between an educator and student, indecency with a child through sexual contact and failing to report child abuse, according to jail records.
Whitten, who taught government and economics at the high school, is currently being held in the Collin County Jail with a total of $22,500 in bonds.
Melissa ISD Superintendent Keith Murphy said Friday that his "heart aches" over Whitten's arrest, as well as the arrest of band director Michael Redell. He was arrested and charged with sexual assault and having an improper relationship with a 16-year-old student earlier this week.
Both men no longer work for the high school. Whitten resigned Thursday. Redell resigned on Aug. 18.
"We have been as open and honest with the public about the events of the last four days as we can be during an ongoing personnel investigation," Murphy said.
Murphy says the safety of Melissa ISD students is the district's priority, and counselors will be available at Melissa High School on Monday to assist those who need them.
