ROCKWALL COUNTY, Texas — A suspect died after leading Rockwall County Sheriff Deputies on a brief chase on FM 548 in Rockwall County, officials said.
On Sept. 30, officers attempted to pull over a vehicle with an obscured paper tag when the vehicle refused to stop, the release states. During the chase, the driver drove into a neighborhood and a passenger in the fleeing vehicle fired multiple rounds at a Rockwall County Sheriff's Deputy. The suspect hit the bumper of a deputy's vehicle, according to a press release from the Rockwall County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies pursued the vehicle driving north on FM 548. The passenger jumped out of the moving car near State Highway 276 and the driver continued to flee for about five miles before the car crashed at FM 548 and Interstate 30.
The driver did not exit the vehicle and as officers approached the car they said that the suspect was no longer moving. He was treated at the scene and taken to a hospital where he died, the release states.
Rockwall County deputies confirmed the driver died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The passenger was later found injured by paramedics, he was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries, the release states.
Rockwall County officials say no one else was injured.
Cash and a weapon were found inside the vehicle, police said. Officials did not release any additional information about the suspects.
