BEDFORD, Texas — Two North Texas law enforcement agencies are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead in Bedford.
Bedford Police Department says at around 2 p.m. Wednesday, officers were notified that cameras picked up a stolen car's plate. Officers tried to approach the person, who then fled the area holding a gun, police say.
Police say they stopped the person near the intersection of Central Drive and L Don Dodson Drive. According to a release from Bedford PD, the person conveyed suicidal thoughts to the officers, and officers tried to de-escalate the situation for several hours.
Bedford PD claims negotiations were unsuccessful, leading officers to use non-lethal methods to subdue the person. Police say the person tried to escape, and when they perceived a threat, officers from Bedford PD and one officer from Hurst PD shot the person.
According to the release, the person died on the way to the hospital. None of the officers were hurt.
Bedford PD says the Bedford Police Criminal Investigations Division is reviewing the incident alongside the Tarrant County D.A.'s Office.
The Hurst officer has been placed on administrative leave, but Bedford PD did not say the status of their officers.
WFAA has reached out to Bedford PD to see if any of its officers are on leave and to get more information on the person who was shot.
