PARKER COUNTY, Texas — A Parker County woman is in custody, and a 13-year-old is in the intensive care unit after he was shot by another teen who gained access to a friend's loaded weapon, officials said.

According to an arrest affidavit obtained by WFAA, Mayci Johnston, 34, is accused of making a firearm accessible to a child, a Class A Misdemeanor. The incident involved her 13-year-old son and two friends, also 13, the affidavit said.

One of her son's friends accessed a loaded revolver in Johnston's son's room, and the gun went off, hitting the other friend, according to the affidavit.

Parker County Sheriff's deputies responded to the incident Tuesday, May 14, around 7 p.m. They found the victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach, and he was later transported to the Intensive Care Unit at Cook Children's Hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to the affidavit.

The teen who shot the victim told an investigator that he got the gun out of a gun cabinet in Johnston's son's room and while he was holding it, it went off. Johnston's son told investigators that his back was turned to the other teens and he didn't witness the shooting but heard the gun go off, according to the affidavit.

Johnston told deputies that she knew her son had the gun in his room and has allowed him to possess guns for two years, the affidavit said.

The victim later told deputies that the teen who shot him told him the gun was not loaded and pointed it toward him.

Johnston was arrested May 18 and released the following day on a $5,000 bond, officials said.
