KAUFMAN COUNTY, Texas — A 16-year-old in a stolen vehicle led officers on a chase in Terrell in Kaufman County on Tuesday in which an officer fired a shot at the teen as the teen drove toward them, police say.

The officer's shot didn't hit the teen or the vehicle, and no injuries were reported, according to police.

Officers in Terrell found a Mazda 6 that was reported stolen out of Dallas shortly before 9 p.m. Tuesday and tried to stop the car, but the driver fled and police pursued until it stopped in the 300 block of E. Alamo Street, according to a news release.

The driver, a 16-year-old from Terrell, entered the Terrell State Hospital grounds and rammed into a gate to leave the grounds, turned onto State Street, and faced off with two officers in an unmarked police vehicle before speeding toward them, police say.

An off-duty officer in the passenger seat of the unmarked police car fired a single shot at the Mazda, and the Mazda veered, but hit the police car and continued to flee, according to a news release.

The teen was eventually taken into custody and taken to the Denton County Juvenile Detention for arraignment on charges, including unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, evading arrest or detention with a vehicle, accident involving damage to a vehicle and criminal mischief,  according to police.

The officer was placed on paid leave pending the outcome of an investigation, Terrell police say.

The Texas Rangers responded to guide the investigation, which is ongoing.

Terrell police say an additional charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon may be added pending further investigation.
