KENNEDALE, Texas — A Kennedale tax preparer pleaded guilty to a $2.6 million tax fraud scheme U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton announced Tuesday.

Anthony “Tony” Floyd, 51, was charged in June of 2023 with 10 counts of aiding in the preparation and presentation of false tax returns and pleaded guilty to all 10 charges the morning of his trial, shortly after a jury was seated, officials say.

Floyd filed about 400 fraudulent tax returns that included false information meant to increase the amount of refund owed, according to court documents.

Floyd recruited “clients” outside big box stores and through other clients and obtained their personal information, including income and deduction information, via text message or cell phone conversations, officials said. Floyd then purposely submitted the returns without reviewing them with the taxpayer, and diverted all or most of the refund money to his own account, officials say.

The resulting tax loss exceeded $2.6 million; officials allege.

The tax filings included falsified W2s and included nonexistent charitable deductions, nonexistent college attendance, and fictitious relatives, officials say.

Floyd faces up to three years in prison per count, for a total of up to 30 years.
