HUMBLE, Texas — Members of the North Shore High School football team gathered to pray Monday as they grieve the loss of a well-liked teammate who was shot and killed over the weekend.
Jarvon Coles, 18, died from a gunshot wound at a house party on Fieldwick Lane in Humble Saturday night.
Teammates and friends who spoke with us on Monday had nothing but good things to say about Coles.
"He really was the face of the east side," teammate Darren Scales, one of Coles' teammates. "He's really bringing us all together right now."
"Jarvon, he brought the best out of anyone he was around, always had positive upgoing energy," teammate Jonavan Chenier-Flemings said.
"He loved to tell jokes," added teammate Caleb Bailey. "He was one of the smartest people I knew."
"Life aint right without him here," said teammate Paul Porter. "He’s always been here with us. He had a 4.1 GPA. He was going to do way bigger things outside of school. I love him so much. I wish he was right here with me today."
"He was like a ball of joy, anywhere you go, you feel his presence," friend Dominique Mitchell said.
His friends are still having a tough time grasping it all.
"I know we're not supposed to question God, but still to this day I ask Him why He took him from us," Mitchell said.
This is just a tough loss for the entire North Shore community.
"Whoever did this, we're broken right now, but we will get strong again," said North Shore HS parent, Victoria Wade-Calicut.
Now, all they want is for the shooter to come forward.
"You shot a young man for no reason, that you don't even know, you didn't have to do that," said Wade-Calicut. "Turn yourself in. Let us know that you're better than what you just did."
Braxton Coles, the teen's grandfather and guardian, said his grandson was a two-time, first-team all-district linebacker at North Shore. He said his grandson had a 4.1 GPA and was accepted into 15 colleges. He had just visited Lamar University and was planning to go there to play football after graduation.
Coles' friends hope the school will honor his memory when they graduate in May.
"Make sure you save him a seat in graduation. He's smart, top 10 percent of the school, one of the best on that football field. I love that man," Scales said.
One of Jarvon's coaches posted a statement to X saying in part, "You cannot measure the impact he had on and off the field in our program. Truly an incredible human being. Prayers needed for his family, our student athletes, our staff and the entire North Shore community."
Who shot Jarvon Coles?
Harris County Sheriff's Office deputies were sent to a short-term rental property late Saturday after reports of underage drinking. They found 50-60 people inside and called for more units.
Someone at the party alerted deputies that a person in the backyard was having a seizure. While attempting CPR, deputies noticed a gunshot wound to the victim's chest. He was rushed to an area hospital but didn't survive.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said it appears that the shooter or shooters "intentionally shot" in the direction of the house party from about a block away.
One of the victim's friends told us the shooting had nothing to do with people inside the party, and that it was calm before the gunshots.
A North Shore mom had a message for the gunman.
"Let us know you’re better than what you just did, you shot a young man for no reason, that you don’t even know, you didn’t have to do that,
