DALLAS A former teacher at the Episcopal School of Dallas was sentenced Monday for having a seven-month sexual relationship with an underage student.
Nathan Campbell was 34 at the time of the offense; the girl was 16.
As part of a plea deal, Campbell will receive 10 years' probation and will have to register as a sex offender.
The victim's attorney said the young woman, identified only as Jane Doe Two, and her family feel Campbell should have been given jail time.
But in the plea agreement, the former teacher pleaded guilty to sexual assault of a child and was sentenced to 10 years probation.
He will also be required to register as a sex offender.
No cameras were allowed inside the courtroom where the victim, who is now an adult, delivered an emotional impact statement after the sentencing.
When John Nathan Campbell walked in, her whole body started shaking, said Charla Aldous, the victim's attorney. We told her she could do it; she was a voice for other sexual abuse victims, and it was very important to her that she face him.
Campbell did not speak at the sentencing, but his attorney, Mark Nancarrow, said he does feel remorse for what he did, and that the court's decision will spare the victim from further trauma.
Her desires were to not have to go through another trial like she had already been through once, Nancarrow said. All in all, I think that the state was satisfied, that with what we came up with, and we are, too.
A civil court judge recently ordered Episcopal School of Dallas to pay more than $9 million to the victim's parents for failing to protect their daughter, then forcing her to transfer to another school.
On Monday, the school released a statement that said, in part, ESD supported full criminal prosecution of Nathan Campbell on both the sexual assault and improper relationship with a student charges ... the school's attorneys are preparing an appeal.
