FORT WORTH, Texas — New details in a DFW Airport DPS report obtained by WFAA provide details surrounding what led up to a deadly shooting that took place at two warehouses across Fort Worth late last month.
The shooting, which happened May 30 at 2:30 a.m. occurred outside of the Refrescos Beverages Warehouse off of Trinity Blvd in Fort Worth.
The suspect, 18-year-old Decan Medeiros of Washington, is accused of murdering 36-year-old Lee Douglas, a Fort Worth father of five. Fort Worth police said the shooting took place in the warehouse parking lot during Douglas’s work break. Police said Medeiros began shooting toward Douglas’ coworkers as they tried to help.
Medeiros then ran across the street and entered the ONCOR Distribution warehouse and fired at a forklift driver three times, police said. The forklift driver, Julio Morales, was uninjured. Days after the shooting, he told WFAA he was suffering from insomnia and felt fear at work.
A newly-obtained incident report says officers in Chattanooga, Tennessee, responded to a suspicious persons call on May 29 after Medeiros began running around female passengers at an airport shirtless. According to the report, Medeiros’ “behavior was off, he was excessively sweating and appeared to be incoherent when spoken to.” Medeiros missed his flight that day.
Medeiros received assistance from officers to board his layover flight from Chattanooga to DFW on May 30. According to the report, a stepmother figure who helped raise Medeiros filed a missing persons report when she didn’t hear from him. She informed officers that Medeiros was in Chattanooga to work with his father after he had been “acting up at home” in Washington. She stated Medeiros had been “using drugs such as marijuana, acid and hallucinogens.”
According to the woman, Medeiros left Chattanooga “mad and upset” at his father, who had asked him to work. When given an ultimatum, Medeiros chose to fly home to Washington instead, the report said.
It’s unclear what led the young man from Washington to the Fort Worth warehouses. Morales, who was uninjured during the shooting, told WFAA he had never seen Medeiros in his life.
In an interview with WFAA earlier this month, Douglas’ daughter, Nevaeh Douglas said the suspect was unknown to their family.
“I don’t know what he had going on at home, but you didn’t have to take my dad away from me,” she said. “I really just want justice for my dad.”
The DFW Airport DPS report includes several screenshots of Facebook posts from an account investigators believe belonged to Medeiros.
In one post, Medeiros wrote, “I have been very sick recently.” In another, Medeiros posted “A lot is on my mind, friends. Hopefully this illness doesn’t take me… trying my best,” the report said.
The woman who reported the missing person’s report said Medeiros suffered from depression, but was never diagnosed with the illness.
Medeiros remains in jail, and his status has been changed to no bond. Medeiros faces four counts of aggravated assault in connection to the shooting.
Records show a psychiatric exam has been ordered for him.
