NAVARRO COUNTY, Texas — Texas law enforcement busted a cockfighting ring in progress Saturday morning in Navarro County.
The Navarro County Sheriff's Office said its deputies "made a surprise visit" to a cockfight in progress in the 13000 block of NW 3050 Road in Purdon. There was a fighting ring, live and deceased birds at the location along with other evidence to support cockfighting, the sheriff's office said. The property owner was arrested, officials said.
As of 2021, cockfighting is a crime in every state and 42 states penalize it as a felony, including Texas, officials said. Spectating cockfights is a class C misdemeanor in Texas, according to officials.
Here is a look at some photos taken from the scene (officials said it did not include graphic photos):
"We intend to remain diligent in our efforts to locate and stop this cruel and horrible blood sport in Navarro County," Sheriff Elmer Tanner said.
