Dallas and Garland police officers opened fire Friday afternoon on a man suspected of shooting his ex-girlfriend's boyfriend hours earlier at a Garland QuikTrip gas station.
Police now say the suspect, Dallas resident Domingo Soto, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Garland Police Department spokesman Joe Harn said Soto, 42, was suspected of shooting William Chapman in the head at about 7:30 a.m. Police found Chapman, 41, lying just inside the gas station, located at the corner of Miller and Shiloh Roads.
Chapman died Friday night at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
The suspect fled the scene in the 2000 block of South Shiloh Rd., Harn said. Police filed an aggravated assault warrant for Soto's arrest.
Around 4:25 p.m. a Garland officer was in the City of Dallas investigating the shooting and saw Soto. The officer requested assistance from Dallas police and they met the Garland officer at C.F. Hawn Freeway and Buckner Boulevard.
The officers conducted a traffic stop and attempted to arrest Soto, but he struggled with them and attempted to drive away with both officers hanging from the vehicle.
The two officers shot at Soto fearing for their lives when they said he appeared to be reaching in his waistband for a weapon.
Soto, who was in a truck with a passenger, fled a short distance before crashing near Elam Road.
Soto was transported to Baylor University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The passenger was taken in by police for questioning.
Dallas police said the medical examiner determined that Soto died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and not by police fire.
A pistol was recovered from the pickup truck, police said.
The investigation led to heavy traffic backups well into Friday evening on C.F. Hawn Freeway, which reopened just before 9 p.m.
