MCKINNEY, Texas — A suspect is in the hospital Tuesday after being shot by a McKinney police officer for brandishing a gun during a chase, police said.
According to the McKinney Police Department, around 5:28 p.m., officers responded to the 1400 block of Amscott Street to the report of a single-vehicle crash.
Police said witnesses reported that the driver of a white Cadillac crashed his car and after exiting it said he was waving a handgun in the air.
According to police, the suspect, 21-year-old Malik Riley from Colorado, left the scene and returned to the car multiple times to remove items.
Police said when officers arrived on the scene, Riley ignored their commands and ran away toward the 600 block of East Graham St.
According to McKinney PD, during the chase, an officer used a Taser on Riley, but it was ineffective. Riley then turned and displayed a handgun toward officers and one of them fired at Riley, hitting him in the abdomen, police said.
According to police, Riley was taken to a local hospital. No officers were injured during this incident.
The McKinney Police Department said Riley was wanted out of Colorado for weapons-related charges with a full extradition warrant for his arrest.
