Man killed in shooting involving Arlington police, department confirms

The shooting happened Sunday at a park in the 6500 block of N. Cooper Street.

ARLINGTON, Texas — A man was fatally shot by an Arlington police officer after the man shot and injured a woman at F.J. “Red” Kane Park in Arlington Sunday night, police say.  No officers were injured in the shooting, police say.

Police responded to the park in the 6500 block of S. Cooper Street around 10:30 p.m. Sunday to a reported disturbance involving a man, later identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office as Shannon Boyd, 42, of Irving and a 40-year-old woman who were dating, Sgt. Alex Rosado said at a press conference Monday.

"As officers were pulling up to the parking lot and exiting their patrol vehicles, the man displayed a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the woman. The officers then immediately fired their service weapon, striking the man," Rosado said.

The number of shots fired is unclear.

Officers provided first aid to the woman and Boyd until paramedics arrived and transported both to local hospitals, where Boyd was pronounced dead, Rosado said.

The woman was listed in critical condition, but Rosado said she was reported to be alert and breathing.

Rosado said three officers were placed on paid administrative leave, and potentially a fourth who didn't fire a weapon.

Two investigations into the incident are running concurrently -- a criminal investigation by the Arlington Police Department homicide team and an administrative investigation led by internal affairs to determine whether or not department policy was followed.

Rosado said police recovered a weapon on the scene and are working to determine how it was obtained.

Police didn't release additional information about a potential motive but Rosado said "we do believe there is a history of domestic violence."

"We're still working with our partner agencies to figure out exactly what the scope is between the two," he added.

Rosado said Arlington parks generally close at 10 p.m., but it's unclear whether or not the F.J. “Red” Kane Park was closed at the time or whether or not they were the only ones in the park at the time.

Rosado said additional details, body camera and other footage from the shooting will be released at a later time.
