DENTON, Texas — The City of Denton says 31-year-old Pedro Martinez has been charged with murder after allegedly selling fentanyl to his coworker, who then overdosed on the drug.

According to the city, on Jan. 21, officers responded to the 500 block of Inman Street to the report of an unconscious man, later identified as 26-year-old Dylan King.

The city says King was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office ruled King's cause of death as combined cocaine and fentanyl toxicity.

Denton PD conducted an investigation and discovered that King had gotten the drugs containing fentanyl from his coworker, Martinez, the city says.

Detectives interviewed Martinez in the Denton County Jail, as he was being held there on other charges, and he allegedly told them that he sold the drugs to King and he knew that there was fentanyl in them.

On June 18, a warrant for Martinez for a charge of murder was obtained by detectives, the city says.

This is the fifth fentanyl murder charge in Denton since a new state law went into effect on Sept. 1, 2023.

Martinez is currently being held in Denton County Jail with no bail set as of yet.
