FORT WORTH, Texas — The Fort Worth Police Department has charged a man in connection with the murder of a Lyft driver who was found fatally shot Friday morning.
Police were called at about 11:39 a.m. on May 17, to the 1500 block of Sandy Lane, officials said, where they found the body of 30-year-old Shawali Sherali with a gunshot wound on his upper torso.
Sherali's brother, Noorali Noor said the family became worried when he didn't come home hours after he typically returned from his workday.
"This is the worst thing that would happen to anyone," Noor said, using a translator.
His family said Sherali brought his wife and two children to the U.S. during the collapse of his native government to seek asylum and safety. Sherali and his wife have a third child on the way. Sherali was the breadwinner of his family, Noor said.
"We were hoping we were gonna have a better life, but we never knew something hard like this would come out of it," Noor said. "I can't even face those kids and tell them how hard life is going to be without their dad."
On Tuesday, 35-year-old Michael Walker was arrested in connection with Sherali's murder, officials say.
Police said that Sherali’s vehicle crashed into a fence before Walker jumped in the driver’s seat and drove off. The vehicle was found abandoned nearby.
Lyft sent WFAA a statement following the incident:
"Our hearts are with Mr. Sherali's loved ones as they confront this unspeakable tragedy, and we have reached out to offer our support during this difficult time. We are actively assisting law enforcement with their investigation, and the rider's account has been permanently banned from the Lyft community."
Sherali's family has created a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses and supporting his wife and children.
"I'm gonna carry this pain my whole life with me," Noor said.
Walker is charged with Capital Murder by Terror Threat, according to the Fort Worth jail records.
