LITTLE ELM, Texas — Little Elm police are investigating a deadly shooting that they say happened during a weekend party.
According to their social media post, officers reported to a shooting call in the 2700 block of Sunlight Drive at 9:30 p.m. Police said they "encountered a large party at the residence" when they arrived.
Two victims were found at the scene: a deceased male and a female with life-threatening injuries, police said. The female victim was taken to a hospital. Police reported her to be in critical condition as of Saturday, Oct. 21.
Police said a third shooting victim was found two streets away on Evening Mist Drive.
Multiple sources confirm to WFAA that the victim who died was 17-year-old Keith Slaughter.
"I don’t really know how to live life without him," his mother, Natasha Slaughter, told WFAA Monday night.
Slaughter said her son had just started touring colleges. He was a basketball star, he loved video games, and he just earned his license.
Keith's big brother, Kemarian, told WFAA Keith just got his braces off and had the biggest smile. He was emotional.
"He was always there for me, know?" Kemarian said. "Whenever I'd go through something dark, he’d be there. And he’d try to guide me back to where I was supposed to be. All throughout college I've been trying to be that role model for him. But all this time he was the role model for me."
"I haven’t really been able to process the fact that someone took him from me," he continued.
Joe Willis, Slaughter's AAU basketball coach, said he got the call late Saturday night about his player being shot.
"I miss him. I've broken down several times," Willis said. "He was a victim of a situation that he had no dealings with. Just the wrong place at the wrong time."
Willis said Slaughter loved playing basketball. He was on Willis's team, YB33. He also played point guard as a senior at Lebanon Trail High School in Frisco.
"He was maybe 5'9", 5'10", but he played as if he was six, seven feet tall," said Willis.
He described Slaughter as a leader on the court who was friends with everyone.
"We lost a great guy," said Willis.
Little Elm Assistant Police Chief Mandy Biter said, "It is very sad that an individual is having a birthday party, and we have to deal with the result of one individual passing away and two being injured."
On Monday, Biter released neighborhood surveillance video in hopes of finding five individuals who may have more information about what happened. One video shows three people running when they hear sirens. A second video shows two people running to a dark-colored vehicle and fleeing the area immediately after the shooting.
Police believe the suspects fled the area. Officials say there is no threat to the public.
"I hope that they understand what they’ve done," Marcos Branch, Keith's stepdad told WFAA of whoever killed him.
"You’ve taken away a phenomenal kid. Who was gonna be a phenomenal man... even if they’re caught, which I believe they will be, and even if they're punished, which I believe they will be, Keith is gone. And you can’t replace a Keith. He’s one of one," he continued.
Investigators have been working with those who were at the party to identify the suspects.
