Kennedale police return fire after teen shoots at family member carrying a 2-year-old, police say

The incident happened at the Alta Landing apartments in Kennedale. Officers responded to reports of a disturbance just before midnight.

KENNEDALE, Texas — One woman is in jail and another is injured after a chaotic scene prompted Kennedale police to return fire overnight, police officials said.

Officers responded shortly before midnight Wednesday to a 911 call placed by a 17-year-old threatening to shoot another person in their home just before midnight at the Alta Landing apartments, 3100 Joplin Road, Kennedale Police Chief Mike Holguin said in a press conference early Wednesday morning.

When officers arrived, they found an older woman and a two-year-old child on the balcony of an apartment. Officers asked the woman to exit the apartment with the child. As the woman exited, police heard a shot and saw a woman fall out of the doorway shot in the back, still holding the two-year-old, according to a press release from the department.

Kennedale police returned fire while attempting to get the woman and child to safety, Holguin said. The suspect was not hit but did stop shooting and retreated into the apartment briefly before exiting with hands raised. Neither the suspect nor police officers were injured in the exchange, police said.

The victim was transported to the hospital in stable condition. The child was uninjured, he said.

"This is very abnormal for us, this does not typically happen anywhere around us or in the city of Kennedale," Holguin said.

The suspect was arrested and will likely face charges for attempted capital murder, three counts of aggravated assault of peace officers and two counts of aggravated assault of a family member, according to the release.

The suspect was later identified as 17-year-old Jazlyn Renfro.

“Based on the preliminary information gathered at the scene, there is no doubt that the officers placed themselves in harm’s way to protect an innocent woman and a child while taking fire from the suspect who was shooting at them from the top of a stairwell," Holguin said.

The officers involved in the shooting were placed on administrative leave while Kennedale police conduct an administrative investigation, the release states.
