'It’s just painful. It’s insulting.' | South Oak Cliff community reacts to killing of Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks

“He’s a very very good guy. He’ll give you the shirt off his back,” said South Oak Cliff resident Jones Mogan.

DALLAS — There are some sounds residents in Oak Cliff said they are used to hearing.

“The gunshots, you hear that all the time, but this time was different,” said Kambira Jones Morgan.

Thursday night, Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks was shot and killed near E Ledbetter Drive in South Oak Cliff. Two other officers were injured.

“I mean it sounded like I was right next to a bunch of people shooting,” said Jones Morgan.

She not only heard the gunfire, but she also knew Officer Burks.

“He’s a very very good guy. He’ll give you the shirt off his back,” said Jones Mogan. “From my understanding, he’s in a marked car. Why would you do something like that?”

It was a shock that many just couldn’t grasp.

“I was flabbergasted. I didn’t know what to think,” said another resident who wanted to remain anonymous.

Many residents said they were shocked to see a shooting happen in the parking lot of For Oak Cliff, an organization helping to build this community through education and social support.

“This is kind of like a hub for opportunity,” said Carolyn King Arnold, Dallas City Council District 4. “That’s what For Oak Cliff is about. It’s about dreams. It’s about hope.”

King Arnold went to the site of the shooting on Friday.

“It’s just painful. It’s insulting. You get angry. We know that’s a very serious topic on our streets that you have folks that have access and want to take the power and take control. Sometimes, they show disrespect to our officers,” said King Arnold.

Joseph Coleman who has lived in the area more than 40 years, said that disrespect has gone too far.

“I’ve called in on numerous occasions to 911,” said Coleman. “I, at times, feel for my safety.”

It is a safety that Officer Burks provided and a hope for change that he shared too.

“I’m definitely lifting his family and friends up in prayer,” said Jones Morgan.

A celebration of life will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 at Watermark Church in Dallas.

For Oak Cliff released the following statement, Friday:
