IRVING, Texas — A 22-year-old woman is facing manslaughter charges after a wrong-way crash killed one person and severely injured another, the Irving Police Department said.
Irving PD said Diamond Brown admitted to intentionally driving her car into oncoming traffic, which resulted in the death of Zainab Monsoori and the severe injuries to Fatima El Adel.
The crash was reported at about 2:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10 at Interstate 635 near State Highway 161 in Irving, police said.
A Nissan Altima driven by Brown was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-635 when it crashed head-on into another vehicle.
Police said Brown was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger in the vehicle that was struck, Monsoori, died at the scene, and the driver of that car, Adel, suffered several broken bones and was hospitalized.
A witness told police that Brown’s vehicle was traveling the wrong way down the right shoulder and then swerved into oncoming traffic when the crash happened.
Investigators determined that Brown’s vehicle was at about 88 mph when it crashed head-on into Adel’s car. They initially believed that Brown was intoxicated and told WFAA that they would have her blood drawn to determine if that was the factor.
But during a secondary interview with Brown, Irving PD said she admitted that the crash was intentional because she was trying to end her own life.
Brown has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for recklessly driving her vehicle into oncoming traffic causing the death of one victim and serious bodily injury to another, police said.
