Harris County chase ends with car slamming into utility pole, passenger trapped, officials say

Deputies said it all started around 1 a.m. when Shenandoah police saw a man running out of a pharmacy. The man then rammed a patrol car, which started the chase.

HARRIS COUNTY, Texas — A police chase ended in a crash just off the North Freeway Monday. One person was seriously injured and taken to a hospital, according to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash happened along the North Freeway at Airtex but started in Montgomery County and ended in Harris County.

Investigators said it all started around 1 a.m. when Shenandoah Police saw a man running out of a pharmacy. The man then rammed a patrol car which launched a police chase.

Harris County Sheriff’s deputies said they eventually joined the chase and set out spike strips in different locations to help.

The suspect eventually exited the freeway and crashed a BMW into a utility pole. That’s when investigators learned there were two people in the BMW.

The driver has been arrested.

“He’s facing felony charge of burglary of a business. Felony evading in a motor vehicle,” HCSO Lt. Kenneth Benoit said. “Depending on if the passenger lives, we may be filing a murder charge in Harris County for a murder charge in this accident.”

The passenger was trapped in the vehicle for some time. Deputies said he was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

The scene was cleared before it impacted rush hour traffic, but power was still out at the intersection of Airtex Drive and the I-45 Frontage Road.
