GARLAND, Texas — A 16-year-old suspect is in custody after allegedly shooting and killing a 21-year-old man on Saturday, according to the Garland Police Department.
In a release, GPD said officers were called to a weapons disturbance in the 3200 block of W. Buckingham Road around 11:30 p.m. Saturday. There, officers found a 21-year-old man from Richardson who had been shot, the release states. According to Garland PD, the man was taken to a local hospital, where he died.
The victim was later identified as Jon Osornio.
GPD said they then used a K9 to track the suspect, who ran from the scene. The K9 tracked the suspect, a 16-year-old who attends Sachse High School, per GPD.
The teen was taken into custody and charged with Capital murder.
"We believe they met to engage in some high-risk criminal behavior, GPD told WFAA.
He is being held at Dallas County Juvenile Detention Center.
Garland ISD released a statement confirming the incident involved one of the district's students and clarifying that the shooting took place off campus.
"We are in close communication with law enforcement and will continue to support their efforts," the release states. "The safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families is always our highest priority."
