Suspect dead after standoff in Tarrant County; Deputy who was shot has been released from hospital

According to Tarrant County Sheriff's office, the deputy was serving a warrant when he was shot.

HALTOM CITY, Texas — The suspect is dead after a standoff with Tarrant County deputies who were serving a warrant in the Haltom City area Wednesday, sources confirm.

Jennifer Gabbert with the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says law enforcement responded to a home in the 2900 block of Elinor Street to serve three felony warrants on a 40-year-old man at about noon.

Gabbert says the man barricaded himself in the home after shooting responding deputy Todd Tipton at least three times. Tipton was taken to a local hospital in stable condition, officials said.

Tarrant County Sheriff Bill Waybourn said Tipton, a 13-year veteran of the department assigned to their fugitive team, was hit in the back of the neck, arm and along his back, but the shots missed his vital organs.

Around 5:45 p.m., officials announced that Tipton was released from the hospital.

"It's just an incredible miracle that we're all grateful for," Waybourn added.

Deputies say the man's warrants were for charges of sexual assault of a child, indecency with a child, and unlawfully restraining a person under 17.

Sources confirmed the suspect died as a result of the standoff shortly after 3 p.m. Sgt. Leah Wagner with the Fort Worth Police Department said they haven't confirmed if the gunshot that killed the suspect was self-inflicted or if it was one received from officers.

Waybourn said the Tarrant County Medical Examiner has the suspect.

Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes said the suspect told officers that he had hostages in the home and when SWAT officers entered the home, the suspect fired at them and the officers fired back.

Nobody else was found inside the home, officials said.

MedStar reported four patients were transported from the scene. Gabbert noted that several SWAT officers were injured by glass during the breaching process.

The Fort Worth Police Department is leading the investigation. Officials didn't identify the man or provide additional details.

"This is another stark reminder of the dangers faced and sacrifices made by the law enforcement community on a daily basis to keep all of us safe," Tarrant County Judge Tim O'Hare posted on social media.

Shortly after 1 p.m., Haltom City police issued a shelter-in-place order related to the shooting for residents between Chesser Boyer Road and 28th Street. Haltom City Police say the shelter-in-place order was lifted at about 2:30 p.m., but they're still asking the public to avoid the area.

"If you do not have a reason to be in the area, please avoid it," Haltom City PD said on Facebook. "Traffic will still be restricted to protect those on scene. First responders will be on scene for quite some time securing the scene and conducting investigation activities."

Dozens of police units, including many from Fort Worth police, responded to the scene.
