Grand Prairie police officer fatally shot armed suspect, department says

Grand Prairie police said they were responding to a family violence call in the 1200 block of Tripoli Street.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas — Grand Prairie police say an officer fatally shot a woman who pointed a gun toward officers as they were responding to an assault call Saturday.

Police responded to a family violence call with an assault in progress in the 1200 block of Tripoli Trail at about 7:10 p.m. Saturday. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim, who able to escape through a window and move to another location, police said. 

As officers were speaking with the victim, the suspect in the assault left the address of the initial call armed with a handgun, then walked toward officers and pointed the firearm at them, police said. An officer then shot the suspect, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene after officers rendered first aid, police said.

Police haven’t identified the suspect pending identification of the next of kin.

The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office officer-involved shooting team responded to the scene and will conduct an independent investigation, and the Grand Prairie Police Department will conduct a concurrent administrative investigation.

The officer who shot the suspect has been placed on routine administrative leave, police said,
