Man shoots wife, mother-in-law in Garland apartment with 2 small children inside, police say

Two people were shot in an apartment Tuesday morning, Garland police say. A suspect is in custody.

GARLAND, Texas — Police were conducting a welfare check Tuesday morning when two people were shot in a Garland apartment, police said. 

Police responded to the welfare check around 8 a.m. Tuesday at the Arts Apartments at Broadway Commons, 741 Broadway Commons, according to a statement from Garland police.

When officers arrived police say they saw the front door of a residence had been opened and two small children were inside.

"As officers entered, gunfire erupted from behind a closed door in a back bedroom. Officers immediately took cover and began issuing commands," police said in a statement.

A man, identified as Brodrick Kennedy, 35, left the bedroom and surrendered to police, officials say.

Officers found two women who'd been shot in the bedroom -- one was pronounced dead at the scene and another was taken to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries, police say.

Detectives identified one of the women who'd been shot as Brodrick's wife, Donillie, 38, and the second as Donillie's mother, Shirley Phillips, 58, police said. 

The children were released to extended family members. police say. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
