Garland officers fatally shoot man who pointed weapon at them, police say

Officers had responded about 11 p.m. to the parking lot, where the 911 caller, Russ Allen McClellan, 48, said he wanted to kill himself, according to a police news release.

Garland police fatally shot a 48-year-old man who pointed a weapon at them in the parking lot of a Dollar General store Friday night, officials said.

Officers had responded about 11 p.m. to the parking lot, where the 911 caller, Russ Allen McClellan, 48, said he wanted to kill himself, according to a police news release.

McClellan said he was parked in a white pickup truck in front of the store and that he had a gun.

When officers arrived, they found McClellan sitting in the driver's seat of the pickup truck. As the officers tried to communicate with him, McClellan grabbed his weapon and pointed it at the officers, police said.

The two officers fired their guns at McClellan, striking him. He died at the scene.

The officers were placed on administrative leave as detectives investigated the shooting.
