Frisco police warn against thieves removing jewelry from people

The thieves seem to be targeting people of South Asian descent, police say.

FRISCO, Texas — Frisco Police are asking residents to be cautious after receiving reports of jewelry thefts over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Officer Grant Cottingham with Frisco PD said the reports are “disturbing” and that the incidents happen within seconds.

“In some cases, they’re literally just walking up to people, they may be asking for directions, or they may be wanting to give them a hug to give them a blessing and they’re very good at removing jewelry from the person,” said Cottingham.

Cottingham said this isn’t the first time they’ve received reports of jewelry theft. He said in years past, the South Asian community was targeted by this specific kind of theft. Cottingham said there is a possibility this could be the case now. Cottingham said in the past victims were typically older women.

Police are still trying to identify any potential suspects in the case.

Here are several safety tips Frisco Police want you to keep in mind.

  • Keep valuables, such as jewelry, out of sight. Be aware of your surroundings, keeping your eyes and ears open.
  • Report suspicious activity by calling 972-292-6010. Don’t allow anyone you don’t know into your personal space
  • Walk in groups as it tends to discourage opportunistic thieves
  • Know your location especially when out walking

Cottingham said as the word continues to spread, he wouldn’t be surprised if more reports come in.
