FORT WORTH, Texas — A 29-year-old man was sentenced Monday for leading a major drug trafficking operation in Fort Worth.

On Monday, Alonzo Smith received a 30-year prison sentence, according to the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas Leigha Simonton.

In May 2023, Smith was charged via criminal complaint and pleaded guilty in July to conspiracy to possess a controlled substance with intent to distribute.

“Violent gangs that flood our neighborhoods with illicit drugs are a true threat to public safety,“ said Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Dallas Special Agent Lester R. Hayes, Jr. in a statement.

According to court documents, Smith and "most heavily armed 5x2 Hoova Crip gang members" were responsible for operating several drug houses in the Fort Worth area.

The homes were the source of storing and distributing large amounts of methamphetamine, cocaine and heroin, court documents revealed. During a search warrant at one of the homes, authorities discovered 800 grams of meth, 188 grams of cocaine, 496 grams of black tar heroin and 300 grams of fentanyl.

"The lengthy sentence imposed on this defendant highlights our commitment to disrupting and dismantling these transnational criminal organizations seeking to exploit our communities for financial gain," said Hayes Jr.

HSI and the Fort Worth Police Department handled the case.
