Fort Worth ice cream man fights for his life after being shot

Neighbors say Ruben Rivera brought ice cream and happiness to kids, but now he’s fighting for his life after being shot.

FORT WORTH, Texas — The bell from Ruben Rivera’s ice cream cart is noticeably missing from the Manitoba Apartment complex.

“It’s really sad,” said Bob Lancaster, who has lived at the complex for three years. “It’s a real shame.”

Someone shot Rivera in an apparent robbery Wednesday inside the complex, according to Fort Worth police. At last update, Rivera was in critical condition at John Peter Smith Hospital.

“I hope he gets better soon,” said Romelia Aranda, who spoke to Rivera every day. “I hope justice can be done.”

While the department looks for the shooter, neighbors fear no one is safe.

Wednesday’s shooting is just the latest in an area that’s seen increased patrols by the department, but neighbors worry no amount of officers can make them feel safe.

“This side of town was the place to move,” Lancaster said of how the neighborhood was a decade ago. “Now, for my wife and I, it’s the place we want to get away from.”

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing and no arrests have been made.
