Defendants sentenced in 15-year-old's fentanyl overdose death, officials say

Two people were sentenced to a combined 15 years in federal prison after supplying a Carrollton teen with fentanyl, Department of Justice officials said.
In 2023, 115 million fake fentanyl pills were seized, nearly 45 million more than the year prior.

CARROLLTON, Texas — Two people were sentenced to a combined 15 years in prison after supplying a 15-year-old girl from Carrollton with fentanyl pills, officials said.

Lizbeth Prieto, 19, and Cristian Lopez, 24, were charged and indicted in 2023, Department of Justice officials said in a press release. Prieto later pleaded guilty to distribution of a controlled substance to a person under 21 and Lopez pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute a controlled substance, the release states.

Prieto was sentenced to seven years in prison and Lopez was sentenced to eight years in prison, the release stated.

Lopez supplied fentanyl pills to Prieto, who then provided them to the victim, who later was found by family members lying unresponsive in her bed, and she was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, according to the release. Law enforcement found 10 counterfeit Percocet pills in the victim's bedroom, and the pills later tested positive for fentanyl, the release stated.

Investigators also found messages on Instagram where Prieto offered to sell the victim 13 fentanyl pills for $100, then confirmed her address, the release stated.

A short while later, Prieto said she was pulling up outside of her home to deliver the pills, officials said.

"It is my fervent hope that we can drastically reduce fentanyl fatalities in North Texas," said U.S. Attorney Leigha Simonton. "Removing traffickers from the streets is another step towards that goal.”
