'We've been through a lot' | Deaf North Texas veteran speaks out after thieves stole her truck

“It’s just like one thing after the next,” Emberly said. “When do we get a break?”

DALLAS — At first glance, footage from a Dallas neighborhood Ring camera seems unremarkable, but the story behind the dark blue Chevy truck seen driving away is anything but ordinary.

The truck was stolen from the driveway of a short-term rental home on Nov. 14, according to Dallas police. It belonged to Brenda Nurre, a deaf veteran. It represented years of hard work, she said.

“I’m mad,” Nurre told WFAA. “For them to take my truck hurts because I saved so much to have that.”

The theft has added to an already difficult time for her family. Nurre’s daughter, Emberly, is recovering from a devastating car crash.

“I hit an asphalt paver that pulled out in front of me,” Emberly said, describing the accident that left her father and boyfriend hospitalized. Both Emberly and her father are veterans as well.

“It’s just like one thing after the next,” Emberly said. “When do we get a break?”

The stolen truck contained personal, irreplaceable items, the women said. Including equipment for Brenda's service dog, family heirlooms, and important documents.

“They have my address, my birthdate, my VA card,” Emberly said, listing the items stolen, which included her wallet, passport and insurance card.

Among the stolen possessions was also a brooch that belonged to Nurre’s late mother.

On top of the theft, the family said they face mounting medical expenses from the accident.

“We’ve been through a lot,” she said. “Not that anyone deserves this, but I have a hard enough life as it is, and I work hard for what I have.”

The Nurres, who live two hours northwest of Dallas, are now trying to rebuild while recovering from their losses and injuries.

Friends of the family have started a fundraising page to help cover ongoing expenses. You can access it here.
