DALLAS — One victim has died from injuries in a late July shooting that saw five victims shot outside of a Texaco gas station in southern Dallas, police say.
The victim was 28-year-old Devon Lewis. Two of the five victims are still hospitalized, police say, a 35-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man.
Police confirmed they arrested 28-year-old Dantae Brooks in connection with the shooting Aug. 14. He was charged with murder and six counts of aggravated assault, the unlawful procession of a firearm by a felon and possession of a prohibited weapon according to an arrest warrant obtained by WFAA.
The Dallas Police Department (DPD) said officers responded at approximately 4:30 a.m. Saturday to the 100 block of West Laureland Road for a shooting call. When officers got to the scene, they found five people had been shot outside of a business, police said. DPD had crime scene tape around the Texaco gas station in that area, which is located at the corner of I-35E frontage road and Laureland Road.
Five people were taken to the hospital, police said, and one of those five were in critical condition.
On Saturday, Dallas PD said two of the victims are women aged 25 and 35, and the other three are men aged 21, 28 and 29.
The shooting happened in a neighborhood where Timothy Thomas works to end gun violence. He's with the organization Strap Down Man Up.
"This gun violence is an issue in Dallas," he said. "The streets hear about these situations before they happen, we're just trying to give them an avenue to go down and make sure we prevent the crime."
Thomas and business owners across the street told WFAA that a sports bar near the gas station sometimes throws large parties.
When Brooks was arrested police found a Glock 17 with a machine gun conversion device attached, according to the warrant. The purpose of the piece is to transform a semi-automatic handgun to a fully automatic handgun, making it a prohibited weapon.
WFAA was shown surveillance from Saturday morning but not given permission to use it. The video shows dozens of people and cars hanging out in the gas station parking lot. At one point someone pulls out a rifle and starts shooting.
Dallas police said an officer was also injured at the scene after they twisted their ankle trying to get a hold of the crowd. The officer was taken to the hospital and is expected to be okay, DPD officials said.
It's unclear what led up to the shooting.
