Undercover Dallas police officer fatally shoots man while responding to robbery call, sources say

A Dallas police officer shot and killed a suspect after a struggle overnight in the 2900 block of South Lancaster Road, police said.

DALLAS — Dallas Police confirmed that an officer fatally shot a suspect after a struggle overnight Thursday.

Covert officers responded to an illegal game room around 1 a.m. July 4 to reports of a robbery in progress in the 2900 block of South Lancaster Road, a police spokesperson said.

According to sources within the Dallas Police Department, undercover police officers happened to be in the area of the robbery and responded to the scene. Because the officers were undercover, they were not wearing vests and were driving unmarked vehicles, sources told WFAA.

When officers arrived, three suspects left through the back door of the game room and jumped a fence where officers were located, a police spokesperson said.

As one of the unmarked officers arrived at the scene and was working to put his vest and body-worn camera on, a suspect ran toward the officer with a gun pointed at him, according to police sources.

The officer and the suspect engaged in a struggle and the officer shot the suspect, according to the DPD spokesperson. Police sources told WFAA that another officer's body-worn camera shows the officer who shot the suspect struggling to get his vest on and backing up from the suspect after the shooting.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. The two other suspects who ran from the scene were arrested, police said.

No officers were injured in the incident, police said.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia will hold a press conference about the incident next week, according to a police spokesperson.
