DALLAS — A pedestrian was killed after being hit by a car in northwest Dallas, police said.
Officers were called to a request for service at about 12:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15 off W Northwest Highway. Officers found that a driver hit a pedestrian in the northbound lane near 1800 Storey Lane and left the scene, officials said.
The victim died at the scene, Dallas police said. He was later identified as 48-year-old James Evan Rodriguez.
Investigators identified the suspected driver as 31-year-old Juan Morgan Munoz, who drove away from the scene and called 911 to report the crash, police said.
Court documents detail the gruesome wreck. They say Munoz left the scene of the crash and drove about a mile with the victim’s severed arm in the car. Police say he was drunk when hit and killed the victim.
The arrest warrant says after the wreck, Munoz drove to his job at a nearby body shop and waited 30 minutes before calling police. Court documents show when officers got there – they found heavy damage to his BMW, including a hole in the windshield, blood, and that body part in the passenger seat.
Munoz admitted to officers that he had hit someone. They said Munoz’ speech was slurred, his eyes were glossy and he wreaked of alcohol. The warrant says he told officers he’d only had one shot of tequila at a Hooter’s in Grand Prairie earlier in the day – but when they had him do field sobriety tests, he failed all of them. The reading on his breathalyzer test was .179.
Once at the jail, court documents show he told detention officers he also had cocaine in his system.
Munoz already has two prior DWI convictions, the first a 2018 charge out of New Hampshire that he pleaded guilty to and another just last year in Fort Worth. He was on probation for the most recent one when this happened.
Munoz was arrested and charged with Felony DWI and Collision Involving Death, police said.
Police did not release any information about the victim.
