DALLAS — Editor's note: Above video previously aired when the deadly shooting took place in January 2023.
A 26-year-old man was indicted for capital murder of multiple persons on Feb. 6 in relation to a January 2023 shooting where five were shot and three people died, according to court records.
The shooting happened at approximately 4:30 a.m. on Jan. 6 at an apartment complex in the 8500 block of Lazy Acres Circle. Dallas police said its initial investigation determined five people were shot while they were gathered in a back parking lot. Three of the victims, two men and one woman, died at the scene. The two other victims, both adult males, were taken to a local hospital.
Three of the victims in the shooting were identified by police as: 31-year-old Cesar Aaron Birrueta-Soto, 29-year-old Queidin Flores and 22-year-old Stanley Chachagua.
During the investigation, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia told WFAA that the shooting was not random and there was evidence of drug use at the scene.
"I will say first of all being involved in illicit activity is no reason to lose your life although placing yourself in that type of situation has lent itself to the majority of our murders. They are people involved in these types of illegal activity," Garcia told WFAA.
Police identified Evin Geovanny Mata-Guzman as a suspect in the shooting on Jan. 9, 2023, and he was considered armed and dangerous. He was arrested Dec. 1, 2023. A grand jury indicted him of the capital murder charge on Wednesday, Feb. 6, court records said.
After the January 2023 shooting at the apartment complex, Garcia said the department made it one of its target zones, adding more officers to the area.
