DALLAS — A hotel security guard shot and killed a man during a shootout in Red Bird over the weekend, Dallas police say.

The security guard, Michael Alexander, 33, was patrolling the hotel in the 4100 block of Preferred Place shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday when he saw two men who didn’t belong on the property and asked them to leave, police say.

Alexander saw one of the men - identified as Cameron Birdwell, 30 - was carrying a handgun as he was following them out and Birdwell drew the gun and pointed it at Alexander, police said in a news release.

The two exchanged fire and Birdwell was shot, police say. Dallas Fire-Rescue arrived and transported Birdwell to a local hospital where he died, officials say. No other injuries were reported.

The case will be referred to a grand jury.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
