Dallas police release portions of dashcam video showing shooting of man who killed an officer, wounded two others last week

The 40-second dashcam video shows the end of the pursuit of the suspect from Dallas into Lewisville.

DALLAS — Dallas police Monday released portions of an edited dashcam video showing the fatal shooting last week of the man who killed Officer Darron Burks and injured two other officers.

The 40-second dashcam video from the end of the pursuit of the suspect in Lewisville shows the suspect, identified as Corey Cobb-Bey, 30, getting out of a vehicle with a firearm in hand, and walking toward officers. Officers can be heard ordering Cobb-Bey to drop the gun before officers begin firing at him.

Dallas Police Deputy Chief William Griffith said Cobb-Bey, 30, parked his white Buick in the 900 block of East Ledbetter Drive shortly after 10 p.m. Aug. 29. About two minutes later, officer Burks arrived and parked near the front of the facilities for the community organization For Oak Cliff between call assignments, according to police.

Cobb-Bey approached Burks and briefly spoke to him through the driver’s side window of his squad car, appearing to record the encounter on his cell phone, Griffith said.

“The suspect then pulls out a handgun and executes officer Burks as he sat in his vehicle,” he said. “At this point, a police dispatcher noticed an unusual transmission from officer Burks’ radio. The dispatcher attempted to contact officer Burks, who does not respond.”

The dispatcher found Burks via GPS and sent officers to check on him and the suspect went back to his vehicle, took out a shotgun and placed it on the roof of Burks’ squad car, Griffith said.

Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Jamie Farmer responded to the scene, pulling into the parking lot at 10:11 p.m., police say. Cobb-Bey immediately fired a handgun at Farmer, Farmer returned fire and ran across the parking lot, Griffith said.

“The suspect grabbed the shotgun from the top of the squad car and fired one time toward officer Farmer, who continued running,” Griffith said. “Officer Farmer was hit one time in the leg.”

Dallas Police Sr. Cpl. Karissa David arrived at 10:12 p.m., positioning her car at the parking lot entrance, police say.

“The suspect ran toward officer David and shot her multiple times as she exited her vehicle,” Griffith said. “Officer David returned fire and was shot in the face during the exchange.”

A sergeant arrived and saw Cobb-Bey standing near his vehicle before he fled westbound on East Ledbetter Drive, then northbound onto I-35, police say. Police pursued Cobb-Bey into Lewisville, where he stopped on the expressway just north of State Highway 121 and got out of the vehicle with his shotgun in hand, police say.

Cobb-Bey pointed the shotgun at officers and officers Nathaniel Baker, David Lem, Corie Reed, Richard Pace, Vladmir Perez, and Joel Portillo all fired at Cobb-Bey, hitting him multiple times, police say. Cobb-Bey died at the scene and no officers were injured in that exchange, according to police.

Farmer was treated and released from the hospital and David remains hospitalized in critical, but stable condition.

Griffith said an investigation determined the shooting was “premeditated” with detectives collecting evidence on social media.

He said police recovered two shotguns from the scene in Lewisville and two handguns from the scene on Ledbetter Drive.

The investigation is ongoing. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office was notified and is conducting a separate investigation into the shooting.

The incident is the fifth officer-involved shooting involving a Dallas police officer in 2024.

A celebration of life for Officer Darron Burks will be held Saturday, Sept. 7 at Watermark Church in Dallas.
