Man accused of killing 4 people in Dallas fatally shot himself as officers chased him, police say

Police say three adults died at the scene, a 15-year-old and a 1-year-old were taken to a hospital, and the 1-year-old later died.

DALLAS — The man accused of shooting and killing four people in Dallas on Sunday afternoon fatally shot himself while authorities tried to arrest him, officials said.

Byron Carillo, 21, fled the scene of the shooting, stole a vehicle and headed south on I-35, to the Austin area, according to a police news release.

When officers located him near Austin, they began chasing him, but he crashed into a ditch and took off on foot, police said. Carillo then shot himself in the head when the officers got close to him, according to the release. He died at the scene.

The initial shooting happened around 4:20 p.m. in the 9700 block of Royce Drive, near St. Augustine Drive and Interstate 20, where police found five people shot.

Three adults died at the scene, police said, and two other victims, a 15-year-old girl and a 1-year-old boy, were taken to the hospital, where the boy later died from his injuries.

The four victims who died were identified by the Dallas County Medical Examiner's Office as: Logan De La Cruz, 1; Vanessa De La Cruz, 20; Karina Lopez, 33; and Jose Lopez, 50.

The family confirmed with WFAA that Karina Lopez and Jose Lopez were Vanessa De La Cruz' parents and Logan was De La Cruz' son. They released the following photo of Karina Lopez (pictured left), Logan (in the middle) and De La Cruz (on the right).

The official causes of death have not been listed yet.

The teen girl was treated at a hospital and later released. A 13-year-old girl was at the home when the shooting happened, but she was not injured.

Police said Carillo was identified as the suspect, but more information about how the shooting happened was not released.

According to the victims' family, Carillo was Vanessa De La Cruz' ex-boyfriend and Logan's father. The family said Carillo lived right next door to Vanessa's family and Carillo was known to be violent toward Vanessa -- the reason why she left him and moved back in with her parents.

Carillo was supposed to be wearing an ankle monitor for a 2021 aggravated assault case, but he "cut off the ankle monitor at some point, before or immediately after, committing the offense," according to the DPD release.

Carillo's death is being investigated by the Texas Rangers.
