Police: Stolen vehicle suspect dies after leading Dallas officers on a chase and crashing into several vehicles

The driver was ejected from a stolen vehicle after leading a police chase and crashing into vehicles, police said.

DALLAS — A man is dead after leading Dallas police officers on a chase near White Rock Lake, police said.

The incident happened Thursday morning just before 11 a.m. in the 1200 block of South Buckner Boulevard.

Dallas Police said they spotted a stolen vehicle in a business parking lot and tried to stop the driver. While walking towards the vehicle, the driver backed up, intentionally rammed the patrol vehicle and sped off, officers said.

During the police chase, police said the driver also hit a city marshal’s vehicle that was not involved in the pursuit.

Dallas Police said the chase ended in the 109000 block of Elam Road -- about 3.5 miles from where it started -- after the driver crashed into another vehicle and was ejected from the Dodge pickup he'd allegedly stolen.

The driver, identified by police as 40-year-old John Carter, died at the scene of the crash, officials said.

There were no other injuries, according to police.

Thursday's incident is the second deadly police chase in Dallas in a month's time.

On September 24, police said a suspect fired on police during a traffic stop on Barnes Bridge Road, and that officers then returned fire as the suspect sped of from the scene

According to Dallas Police, officers then chased the suspect until he lost control of the car and flipped it. Dallas police said the suspect shot at police as officers approached the wrecked vehicle, which police said they later determined was stolen. The officers fired back and shot the suspect, who was later pronounced dead.

While inspecting the scene with a drone, police said they discovered a woman captive inside the vehicle and rescued her.

According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau, vehicle theft is up nationwide, and up nine percent over where it was at this time last year.
