DALLAS — The two women who were fatally shot in Old East Dallas early Saturday were killed by one of their boyfriends, according to a newly obtained arrest affidavit.
The Dallas Police Department (DPD) responded to a shooting call at 3 a.m. Saturday May 18 on North Washington Avenue, police said in a statement.
When they arrived, officers found two women dead from gunshot wounds: sisters Amaya Lockett, who was 24 years old, and Jalisa Lockett, who was 22 years old.
Both girls were young mothers, who lived together in an apartment building. Jalisa had a 2-year-old daughter, Amaya had a 10-month-old son.
“This was a situation that we didn’t see coming,” the girls’ father, Jaunci Lockett, told WFAA Sunday.
According to an arrest affidavit, after an argument in the girls’ shared apartment, Saddiq Shabazz, Jalisa’s boyfriend, shot her dead. He then reportedly came out of the bedroom and shot Jalisa dead too.
Shabazz also shot Amaya's boyfriend, investigators say, but he survived by barricading himself in another room. He then helped lead police to Shabazz, who according to his arrest affidavit, told police that he “started shooting out of rage, and acknowledged he did not mean to kill them, but he could not take it back.”
Their father spoke to WFAA hoping their story might encourage others to look for signs of domestic violence.
“This was a situation that we didn’t see coming, it was, to the extent that it went we didn’t think it would ever go that far,” Jaunci said. “Just to get people to understand the signs, pay attention to what’s going on…If this could help anyone bring light to just how quickly life can be taken away that would be good for me, I would like that.”
Jaunci is now working to support his grandchildren who will grow up without their mothers. He started a GoFundMe to raise money for them. For more information or to donate, click here.
Police charged Shabazz with capital murder of multiple persons. He is in the Dallas County Jail with a $3 million bond.
