Crowley police charge 35-year-old with murdering teen after argument stemming from video game, affidavit shows

Police responded to a shooting around 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 in the 1200 block of Celeste St., Crowley police said.

CROWLEY, Texas — A 35-year-old man was arrested Sunday after allegedly fatally shooting a 16-year-old after words were exchanged while the two were playing video games, a probable cause affidavit states.

Officers responded to a shooting call around 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, in the 1200 block of Celeste Street in Crowley. The victim, Tavion Swindell, was taken to a hospital where he died, police said in a statement.

Police arrested Deeven Letroy Jones, 35, in Fort Worth later Sunday evening. He was charged with murder and tampering with physical evidence, police said.

"The initial investigation indicates this was an isolated domestic incident," the statement reads.

According to the affidavit, Jones and Swindell were playing video games when Swindell's sister came into the residence. During gameplay, the two were reportedly "smack talking," and as things continued, Jones said he needed to leave and Swindell said he couldn't wait to beat people in the game.

After saying this, Jones reportedly said Swindell can't even beat him, the affidavit detailed. Swindell said "Who can't?" before Jones reportedly pulled out a gun, placed it against Swindell's chest, and shot him.

Jones reportedly told Swindell's sister not to call the cops, then left the residence with the gun.

In addition to murder, Jones was charged with tampering/fabricating physical evidence with intent to impair. The affidavit accuses Jones of taking the firearm from the scene to hinder police from being able to find evidence, and that he reportedly told his sister from a different cell phone that he had thrown his phone away.

The football coach at Southwest High School announced that the school canceled Thursday's scrimmage in the wake of Swindell's death.

"Our raiders will utilize this time to grieve, heal, and become closer as a football program," Coach Turner said in a statement.

The team is expected to play on August 30 against Dallas Bryan Adams.
