AZLE An Azle man was arrested Sunday night after he allegedly set his girlfriend on fire.
Deputies with the Parker County Sheriff's Office arrested Mark Morgan Upchurch Sunday night. According to officials, upon his arrest, Upchurch said, 'I think I know why y'all are here because what I did to my girlfriend when I lost my mind.'
In a statement released Monday morning, officials with the Parker County Sheriff's Office said the 37-year-old victim suffered burns to 30 percent of her body. She was transported to a Dallas hospital in critical condition and with first and second-degree burns.
Sunday night, a man brought the victim to the Harris Southwest Hospital and accused Upchurch of purposefully setting the woman on fire, officials said.
He later told deputies he saw the victim run from the driveway of her home in the 1500 block of Riverbend Street and yell, 'Mark set me on fire!'
'The neighbor told deputies he observed her skin peeling off and immediately drove her to the hospital for medical treatment,' the statement read.
Upon arriving at the scene, deputies saw a 2005 black Saturn with a scorched interior in the driveway and charred areas in the yard. Deputies said they also found a propane torch and two empty gasoline containers.
Upchurch was charged with aggravated assault causing serious bodily injury and was booked into the Parker County Jail. According to deputies, he had several outstanding warrants from Arlington, Grand Prairie and Burleson.
Officials didn't release the victim's name.
