DALLAS COUNTY, Texas — The Dallas County Sheriff's Office is still searching for Juan Aguilar-Cano one year after investigators say he abducted his 10-year-old son and strangled his mother to death, 48-year-old Zuleika Lopez, in their Wilmer home.
A spokesperson for the sheriff's office told WFAA that the agency is working with U.S. Marshals and Mexican Officials to find Aguilar-Cano but has not had any luck.
Aguilar-Cano is believed to be in Mexico after leaving the boy with his family there following the 10-year-old's abduction and his mother's murder.
On November 14, the boy was the subject of a statewide AMBER Alert after Lopez's body was found in the family's mobile home. He was returned to his sister, Zuri Lopez, several days later after authorities found him safe in Mexico and were able to return him to the U.S.
Lopez soon became the boy's caretaker and stayed vigilant about finding Aguilar-Cano. She, to this day, is taking care of him. However, she is frustrated with the seemingly small progress the police have made to bring her mother's alleged killer to justice.
"I think about my mom constantly, and then the switch flips, and I think about him (Aguilar-Cano) and just how much I hate him and how much he needs to answer for what he did," Lopez said. "It's about time that something gets done. I don't know who can do that for us, but it's time."
Aguilar-Cano has since been indicted, which legitimizes search efforts to a degree, but Lopez bluntly told WFAA that she feels like her family has been forgotten.
"It's frustrating that nothing has been done, and it's been a year. I'm leaning onto hope that justice will be served."
Call 911 or the Dallas County Sheriff's Office if you know where Aguilar-Cano is.
