SAN ANTONIO — Police are investigating after two rounds of shootings outside a Joint Base San Antonio training facility early Saturday morning, the second of which prompted return fire from military security, officials say.
No one was hurt in either incident.
San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) officials say someone fired at Air Force security personnel at the gate of Chapman Training Annex, located along Medina Base Road, at around 2:15 a.m. That service member "stated they heard several shots fired as well as the fired rounds go past them," a preliminary police report said.
Additional security was added as a precaution at the facility gate.
Later, around 5 a.m., a sedan pulled up near the same gate and, again, "shots were fired at Air Force security personnel," according to SAPD. Multiple members of Air Force security returned fire at the vehicle before it left the scene.
No one has been arrested as of yet. Police said they found evidence of the gunfire at the scene.
JBSA officials are calling this an "off-base shooting incident" since it occurred near the main entry gate of the training annex, about three miles from Lackland Air Force Base proper.
Military officials say there was no active threat to the facility, despite earlier categorizing the suspect as an "active shooter." It isn't believed as of now that the suspect had military connections, according to a press release from JBSA.
The gate to the training annex was initially closed and traffic redirected to an entry point north on Ray Ellison Boulevard. Normal operations resumed by 10 a.m. Saturday.
Military officials are investigating the shooting due to the fact that a service member discharged their weapon.
