Man killed his wife because he didn't want to eat pancakes she made, DOJ says

The Department of Justice claims the “defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her."

WASHINGTON — An 85-year-old man has been charged with killing his 81-year-old wife in D.C. over a plate of pancakes.

On Sunday, DC Police arrived at the 1300 block of Corcoran Street in Northwest for reports of a stabbing. When they arrived they found 81-year-old Sharon Schwartz inside their apartment suffering from stab wounds. Police also found 85-year-old Steven Schwartz with self-inflicted wounds.

Both were taken to a nearby hospital where Sharon Schwartz succumbed to her injuries and died.

A preliminary investigation suggested Steven Schwartz had probable cause to kill his wife. Police took him into custody and charged him with second-degree murder.

On Thursday, Steven Schwartz appeared before a judge via video and entered a not-guilty plea. However, the judge ordered that Steven Schwartz be held without bond pending his preliminary hearing on January 2, 2024.

Officers have not released a motive for the murder but a press release issued by the Department of Justice D.C. office states the “defendant did not want to eat the pancakes she made and stabbed her in the back.”

If you or anyone else has any information on the suspected murderer or this case, you can contact DC Police detectives at (202) 727-9099 or by texting the department's tip line at 50411.
