Two men were arrested in a shooting that involved a Garland Police officer Saturday night, according to a release from the department.
Police responded to multiple reports of shots fired in the 500 block of West Avenue F around 10:30 p.m. Two men were found to have firearms at a nearby residence.
Omero Lopez, 25, was loading a handgun in the backyard of the home and at some point fired the weapon, police said. Antonio Mendez-Villatoro, 17, fired several shots.
“Officers contacted several male subjects at the location,” read Sunday’s release. “During the encounter an officer fired one round at one of the suspects but did not strike anyone.”
No one was injured.
Lopez, a convicted felon, will be charged with unlawful possession of a firearm. Both suspects face charges of discharging a firearm in certain municipalities.
The officer who fired his weapon during the incident, a 16-year veteran of Garland PD, has been placed on routine paid administrative leave.
