Three men, two girls arrested in shooting death of 18-year-old man

18-year-old Jake Reynosa was shot and killed in Victory Park. Two teen girls and two men have been arrested and charged with Capital Murder in the shooting.

DALLAS — The Dallas Police Department has announced five people have been arrested in connection to the shooting death of an 18-year-old man in Dallas, police say.

DPD says they responded to a shooting call Sunday around 5:15 a.m. in the area of N. Houston Street and Nowitzki Way in the Victory Park neighborhood of Dallas.

There, police found 18-year-old Jake Reynosa shot in the street near American Airlines Center. DPD says he was transported to the hospital, where he later died.

According to an affidavit, Reynosa and three other people were walking on Houston St. when they were approached by several people in a maroon sedan. One of the juvenile girls approached Reynosa and asked if she could have his phone so she could put her name and Instagram into it, police say.

While the juvenile girl was talking with Reynosa, the sedan dropped off suspects 19-year-old Christopher Gaines Jr. and 18-year-old Isaiah Simmons down the street, according to an affidavit.

The affidavit says the sedan then looped back around and dropped off a second juvenile girl, who also started talking to Reynosa. While they were talking, Gaines Jr. and Simmons began approaching them.

According to the affidavit, Reynosa and the witnesses saw the two men approaching, got nervous, and ran. Police say the two men continued to chase the group to the intersection of Houston St. and Nowitzki Way, where Simmons shot Reynosa once in the back.

Police say Reynosa staggered and fell to the ground. Then, the affidavit claims Simmons took Reynosa's phone from his hand.

After Reynosa was shot, the two girls and the two men got back into the sedan, which was driven by another suspect, Latraveone Wherry, and they drove off, according to the affidavit. Police say they later found the sedan, which was reported stolen earlier that day during an aggravated robbery and carjacking. After a short chase, the suspects fled on foot, but police arrested the two girls, records show.

According to police, both girls confirmed that the five suspects had been driving around that day looking for people to rob. The affidavit claims one of the girls said the group had attempted to rob someone in the Victory Park area that same day.

Both girls were charged with Capital Murder. Their identities will not be released since they are both minors.

On Aug. 6, 19-year-old Latraveone Wherry was taken into custody by the US Marshals Task Force. Wherry has been charged with Capital Murder, Dallas PD said.

Jail records show Isaiah Simmons was booked into Dallas County Jail on July 20. His bail was set at $1 million. Christopher Gaines was booked into jail on July 23. He faces a bail of $2 million. Both men are facing a charge of Capital Murder.

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call Detective Kramer at 214-347-1713.
