AANHPI Heritage Month | Where to celebrate across North Texas

What started as just one week in May has evolved over the decades into a monthlong tribute with events in cities big and small.

DALLAS — May is Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and different organizations in North Texas will be hosting celebrations and events to recognize it.

Whether addressed as AANHPI, AAPIDA (to include Desi Americans) or AAPI, the acronym serves to bring several identities together while working to include the many ethnicities that have helped shape the U.S.

Here is a list of events and celebrations happening all month long in North Texas.

Saturday, May 4

Plano Asian American Heritage Festival

Celebrate Asian artistic traditions, such as cooking, visual art, calligraphy, martial arts, origami, fashion, and more.

The festival at Haggard Park will also feature cultural performances from all parts of Asia and food trucks. Plano AsiaFest ‘24 is also hosting a month-long Art Exhibition in the lobby of the Courtyard.

Saturday, May 11

FC Dallas Asian American Heritage Night

When Dallas hosts Austin FC, the Toyota Stadium will celebrate the diversity, resilience, and contributions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities with dragon and lion dances throughout the concourse before the match and at halftime.

Friday, May 17

Asian Heritage Fest 2024

This free 3-day event will be filled with food, music, and culture. Guests will have a chance to sample mouth-watering Asian cuisine from different countries and regions. The fest will also feature a wide range of colorful and lively performances.

Various cultural displays and exhibits will highlight the achievements and struggles of Asian Americans throughout history.

Saturday, May 18

AT&T Performing Arts Center AAPI Family Weekend

Once again, Sammons Park will be full of beautiful artisanal vendors, community representatives from different Asian countries, delicious food stalls and trucks, and incredible local performers.

Guests will enjoy local musicians, martial artists, dancers, and experience a traditional dragon dance.

Sunday, May 19

AAPI Heritage Boat Race at White Rock Lake

This inaugural event will showcase live performances, hands-on workshops, art, food, vendors, and attendees can watch or paddle along with the Dragon Boat race. 

The event is free but registration is required for those wanting to compete in the Dragon Boat race.

Saturday, May 27

Krio + Asian Grub AAPI Night Market Block Party

The Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month Block Party is back again this year—but this time as a night market!  Thirty local food and art vendors will showcase the delicious food and creative art DFW has to offer.

The Texas Rangers Asian Heritage Night is scheduled for June 7 at Globe Life Field. Ticket holders will receive a special Year of the Dragon-themed jersey.
